Keeping the Trust

The proposed plan will improve Indian trust by forming a new departmental organization that exclusively oversees trust management. The plan allows the Bureau of Indian Affairs to intensify and redouble its commitment to improve economic development, transportation, education, and law enforcement in Indian Country.

  • The President's 2004 Budget will increases the funding for trust reform to $481 million, a $168 million increase.
  • President Bush has proposed a $123 million increase for Indian Trust Operations under the Office of the Special Trustee.
  • The President has budgeted an additional $206 million for trust modernization and improvements.
