Commitment to Education

Education is essential to the future success of tribal communities. We will work together to ensure that our Indian education programs offer high-quality instruction and job training that contribute to the vitality of our Native American communities.

  • President Bush has increased funding for school repair and school construction for tribal schools
  • The "No Child Left Behind" Act has been fully implemented on Indian reservations, benefiting not just Indian school children, but college students, adults, tribal leaders, and tribal education offices.
  • For the first time, the Office of Indian Education Programs has been elevated to report directly to the Undersecretary of Education.
  • The Bureau of Indian Affairs will receive a $9.4 Million grant for the Reading First Initiative. Over six years, BIA is set to receive $30.4 million in Reading First funds.
